On\r\nMarch 4, 2015 U.S. Mission Uganda partnered with Isis- Women's International Cross-Cultural\r\nExchange (Isis Wicce) to celebrate Uganda's\r\nmost courageous women as part of their 2015 Women's History month activities.\r\nWinners were selected in the categories of Peace & Security, Governance,\r\nHuman Rights, and Economic Opportunities.

\r\n\r\n

High Court Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Lydia Mugambe Ssali, a\r\nUPDF colonel, Colonel Rebecca Mpagi, a nurse Ms. Winnie Nakalema and an\r\nentrepreneur, Ms. Donata Komuhangi emerged as the winners of this year’s Women\r\nof Courage awards. They were recognized at an event held at the Sheraton Hotel\r\nKampala on the evening of March 4, 2015.


\r\n\r\n

These amazing women overcame\r\npsychological, economic, and socio-cultural barriers and demonstrated immense\r\ncourage and tenacity in championing an exceptional cause that has contributed\r\nto the development of their communities.

\r\n\r\n


\r\nThe award was conferred by the US Mission to Uganda in partnership with\r\nIsis-WICCE, a women’s human rights organization.

In his remarks, US Ambassador Scot H. DeLisi said the\r\nwomen were honored for demonstrating exceptional courage, strength and\r\nleadership in the areas of governance and human rights, economic development,\r\nhealth and peace and security.

\r\n\r\n


\r\nThe four women, who were celebrated at the Women of Courage diner, were\r\nselected from the 55 names that had been put forward by the time nominations\r\nclosed in October 2014.

Hon. Justice Lady Justice Lydia Mugambe Ssali thanked the\r\nJudiciary for the opportunity to serve and welcomed the recognition as being\r\nfor the sections of the Judiciary that are delivering despite a host of\r\nproblems.

\r\n\r\n

The Women of Courage\r\nprogram highlights the U.S. Mission Uganda's dedication to the empowerment of\r\nwomen in Uganda.
